Those who shaped us

The visionaries who gave their might and lent their strength. Visvodaya grew into what it is today because of their untiring efforts.

“Love and Service is the message of Victor Hugo’s Jean Valjean — and DR made it his mission to urge the Visvodaya family to practise it with devotion and in a selfless spirit.”
Dodla Ramachandra Reddy — Founder

Founder

Dodla Ramachandra Reddy (DR)

Visvodaya and DR have grown synonymous over the years. A young graduate of twenty, he established Kavali College in 1951 with the conviction that education is the only weapon that can eradicate poverty.

After Intermediate at Loyola College and a Bachelor’s at Pachaiyappa’s College, Madras, DR founded the college that would become Jawahar Bharati. His second dream — Visvodaya — became one of the leading educational centres in Nellore district. He lived by one hope: to live and spread the message of Jean Valjean. “Visvodaya is my whole world, and the whole world is Visvodaya to me.”

Brothers in service

Builder of dreams

Pucchalapalli Harishchandra Reddy (PHR)

A zealous crusader for the cause he believed in, PHR was the energy that sustained efforts to make the institution a reality. He literally begged for every brick that went into its construction. The birth of Kavali College was, in a way, the story of his sweat and toil. The Open Air Theatre and the Junior College bear his name.

People’s doctor

Pucchalapalli Ramachandra Reddy (PVR)

Ram was a multi-faceted genius — devoted friend, volcanic source of energy, and social scientist. A surgeon of excellence and a committed Marxist like his brother Sundaraiah, he trained barefoot doctors and started a people’s polyclinic. He inspired the founding of Visvodaya and shared campus life with students and teachers (1963–64). His memory lives through Dr. Ram’s Centre for Social Work and Culture.
